How to Create a WordPress Website on Siteground

You can easily create your Virtual Assistant WordPress Website on Siteground. Prior to soaking up all the knowledge at the Virtual Savvy website, I had never even heard of Siteground.

I had always purchased my domains from GoDaddy. And I just assumed that when the time came to set up a website, I would continue to work with GoDaddy. But after researching GoDaddy’s web hosting service, I learned that their managed WordPress hosting service auto-updates the WP version and you can’t roll it back. It can’t be turned off. This is a terrible practice because if there is an update that conflicts with a plugin, your site could be down for 2 or 3 days while they try to restore your backup. What a headache!

Siteground is cheaper, support is terrific and security is great. Winner, winner chicken dinner!

Follow these step-by-step instructions to get started with Siteground today.

Step 1 – Choose a Siteground Plan

Head over to Siteground and get started with the Managed WordPress Hosting Option.

Then, you’ll choose which managed WordPress hosting plan you want. I suggest starting with the cheapest plan. The StartUp plan is perfect for new business owners with one website.

There is really no reason to move out of the gate with a more expensive plan. And it may never be necessary for your Virtual Assistant website.

Step 2 – Choose A Domain

Next, you need to choose a domain name for your site. If you already own a domain name, you can add it to the “I have a domain name” box, and you will just have to go through a few extra steps to make sure you get your DNS pointed to Siteground. If you don’t already have a domain name, you can purchase one from right in the signup process, and the best part is, it will only cost $15 per year. Simply use the “new domain” box to pick the domain you want and click next.

Let’s back up for just one minute – what’s a domain? The domain is a fancy word for the web address. Your web address is the same as the URL. In the same way that the house you live in has an address, your website will have an address.

Step 3 – Make Your Payment

On the next screen, you will fill in your personal information, choose your package information, and enter your payment info.

You can elect to pay for 12, 24 and 36-month terms. Be warned – Siteground may advertise the 12 month plan as the best deal. However, if you pay for 12 months, you will be hit with a renewal rate of almost $180.

It’s actually better to choose the 24 or 36-month term. To help save you money, the longer term you purchase, the lower the monthly rate will be. Simply put, prices always go up and new customers are treated the best. So try to pay for at least two years and you’ll be saving yourself the renewal shock.

You also have the option to select extra services. Please consider Domain Privacy. Without Domain Privacy, Siteground can share your contact information with Web Designers and you may end up with lots of spam email. And don’t think it’s just Siteground that does this. GoDaddy and Bluehost do it also!

Step 4 – Pick a WordPress Theme

When you create a WordPress website on Siteground, the final step is to pick a theme.

First, create a password for WordPress. Don’t lose it!

Second, pick a free theme for your newly created site. Don’t fall into analysis paralysis. It’s just anything to get you started. And then click Launch!

Now it’s time to actually get started building your Siteground hosted website! Once you have a general idea of what you want your site to look like, you can find the best theme to match.

Best WordPress Themes For Virtual Assistants

I’m including a list of WordPress themes that you can check out. These themes are perfect for Virtual Assistants and all of the themes on this list:

  • have a responsive layout design, which means your website will fit every screen, from desktop to tablet and mobile
  • allow you to easily customize the colors
  • add your own header logo
  • are woocommerce compatible, meaning that you can easily create a passive income stream by selling digital products

ChicServe by Bluchic

ChicServe is a gorgeously designed WordPress theme created for female-owned service-based businesses. With it’s easy to use drag & drop free Elementor editor plugin, you get total control of the look and feel of your website, without needing to understand the technical bits.

Victoria by Bluchic

Victoria is perfect for you if you’re a new Virtual Assistant that wants to launch with a simple website that you can have up and running in just a day or two. I love the minimal, yet the ultra-professional look of the Home, About and Services page.

Beloved Theme by Restored 316

Now, I’m going to be honest. When the Beloved Theme was released, I didn’t really like the way it looked, and I certainly didn’t think it was a great fit for a Virtual Assistant. But then I saw the website that Sherry at Painless Blog Analytics created and I was like “Whoa!” Take a few minutes to compare the Sherry’s site. It’s really impressive!

Splendor Theme by Restored 316

There is so much to love about the Splendor Theme. The theme comes with 4 different home page designs and “one-click” automatic install. Because this theme is built with Gutenberg blocks, it is very easy to add, edit and remove sections. It comes preloaded an About Page and Sales Page that can quickly be edited to highlight you and your services.
